True Detective star Mahershala Ali - How to legally watch True Detective season 3 in Australia

Oh boy, oh boy. After a three-year hiatus HBO is bringing back everyone's favourite gritty crime drama True Detective and we're pumped. While season two met with poor reviews, commentators everywhere are predicting a return to form in the new season which stars Mahershala Ali.

The new season will start January 14 and if you want to get in on the action, here's how.

Foxtel Now

Foxtel Now is probably the easiest way to keep up with True Detective season 3 as it airs. The pay TV giant has nabbed the rights for the new season and will be releasing episodes express from the US.

True Detective comes with Foxtel Now's starter pack for $25 per month. With True Detective season 3 containing a total of eight episodes airing on a weekly basis, that means it should end up setting you back $50 total. Foxtel Now is strictly no-contract which means you can cancel anytime.

While Foxtel Now is definitely pricier than what we Australians have been used to for a streaming service, the pack delivers a tonne of premium content. As well as the new season you can catch up on True Detective seasons one and two as well as other TV hits, like The Walking Dead.

Foxtel Now is available on iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, Google Chrome on Windows and Mac, Telstra TV, Chromecast and of course the Foxtel Now Box. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox One run the older Foxtel Play app, which can access the same content, but won't play shows in high definition.

Foxtel

If you're not keen to stream, you can get your True Detective fix with Foxtel proper. To watch, you'll need to get yourself the entertainment starter pack plus the drama pack which will set you back $49 per month.

Be mindful that this option is offered on a 12 month contract and comes with a set-top box fee of $125 and an installation fee of $100. That means you'll pay $274 upfront and $813 total across the full year.

Foxtel services can also be bundled with broadband from Foxtel, Telstra, or Optus.

Wait for the iTunes and Google Play release

If you think you can handle the wait, you should be able to buy True Detective season 3 from either Google Play or iTunes once the entire season has aired. Based on past pricing you should be able to snap up all eight episodes for around $25 total.

We're expecting the final episode to air on March 4 and for season passes to appear on iTunes and Google Play not long after. In the meantime, both services are offering seasons 1 and 2 at cut-price rates. You can pick up each season in HD from Google Play for just $12.99 or from iTunes for $14.99.
