South Park

Nathan's notes: It's been going for almost 30 years, but this show still has laugh-out-loud comedy bite.
Nathan's rating:
With a $1.5 billion deal, South Park is set to be a Paramount Plus staple for at least the next five years. That's good news for future viewing, but the better news is there are already 26 seasons of side-splitting episodes to dig into. If you're new to the show, South Park is an animated comedy aimed firmly at adults with its no-holds-barred satire, voiced primarily by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. From season four onwards, episodes are produced in as little as a few days, offering a rare timeliness for scripted comedy. It'll also take around 20 seasons before you start to get into the territory of less-than-fantastic fare. While the odd episode misses, you'll know from the get-go whether South Park's type of crass, surreal humour is primed to tickle your funny bone.
Creator: Trey Parker and Matt Stone | Cast: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, April Stewart | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Animated comedy

Dexter

Nathan's notes: Digging up this crime classic is well worth the exhumation.
Nathan's rating:
Like Breaking Bad, Dexter is one of those shows where its fans will give you grief if you haven't seen it. Controversial original ending aside, Paramount Plus has streaming rights to a Dexter-verse of sorts with the New Blood, Resurrection, and Original Sin sequels/spin-offs. But you really shouldn't touch any of those unless you've tasted the original. It (and the others) follows the plight of titular Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician who also happens to be a serial killer. The hook is Dexter only puts his hooks into murderers who have dodged their justice desserts. Chances are you'll be hooked from season one, and your reward for continued bingeing is one of the most beloved seasons of television when you get to season four.
Creator: James Manos Jr | Cast: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Crime drama

Ray Donovan

Nathan's notes: This Hollywood fixer's life would be perfect if only he could fix his dysfunctional family.
Nathan's rating:
Ray Donovan is a prime example of a hard-hitting drama that makes for compelling viewing from the season one pilot through to its finale. While Paramount Plus doesn't have the comparatively lacklustre movie full stop, it does have all seven seasons of the show. Ray Donovan is a Hollywood fixer who'll do anything for his family, but his family is littered with people who have incredibly haunted pasts. Liev Schreiber's titular Ray Donovan arguably has the most skeleton-cluttered closet of them all. Schreiber's three-dimensional portrayal of an anti-hero who does some pretty unlikeable things could've been the death knell of the show if not for engrossing acting paired with incredible writing. It helps that Schreiber has a juggernaut supporting cast, including Eddie Marsan, Jon Voight, Dash Mihok, and Paula Malcomson.
Creator: Ann Biderman | Cast: Liev Schreiber, Eddie Marsan, Pooch Hall | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Drama

Yellowjackets

Nathan's notes: A brutal but compelling look at how physical survival isn't the same as mental survival.
Nathan's rating:
Stan still has the streaming rights to Yellowstone, but there's another show that starts with "Yellow" that's well worth the binge on Paramount Plus. Yellowjackets is a story told across two time periods. The main thrust of the story is set in the present day, where the survivors of a plane crash wear the respective scars of an extended foray in the harsh Ontario wilderness.
The other part of the story is set in that plane-crash past, where a group of mostly teenage girls are forced to survive in a very spooky forest. Both storylines are just as compelling. The present day, where there's a truce among survivors to hide the full truth of what happened. And the past, where the truth of what happened is sometimes as horrific as it is compelling. Come for the mystery but stay for every scene that showcases Christina Ricci at her absolute best.
Creator: Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson | Cast: Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Psychological thriller

Halo

Nathan's notes: A departure from the source material that's not afraid to get bloody.
Nathan's rating:
It's apparently hard to get a fully faithful Halo adaptation. If you (like me) are a big fan of the Halo games and the epic sci-fi storytelling, you'll want to leave a lot of that in the game world if there's any hope of enjoying the Halo TV show. But there is plenty to like about Halo on Paramount Plus, more so whenever it shifts closer to the source material. Pablo Schreiber jumps into the space boots of Master Chief, and while he isn't as fond of his helmet as his Dredd-like source material, he does a good job of handling the tortured past of what it takes to make a child-turned-Spartan soldier. Set before the events of the first game, there are some genuinely impressive (and surprisingly brutal) action set pieces that even the staunchest Halo purists should enjoy.
Creator: Steven Kane, Kylie Killen | Cast: Pablo Schreiber, Shabana Azmi, Natascha McElhone | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Sci-fi drama

Corporate

Nathan's notes: A dark corporate satire that gets funnier with every episode.
Nathan's rating:
This may be the contender for best under-the-radar comedy ever made. It's not your fault if you've never heard of Corporate. It feels like its three seasons came and went without much fanfare. But it is a gift for anyone who discovers it. While the oddball stories primarily revolve around creators/leads Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman, the biggest laughs come from the supporting cast. This includes the late, great Lance Reddick who is seemingly up for anything when it comes to comedy, and he rarely misses. He dominates every scene he's in, but so too does an HR manager who doesn't care about anybody, or the two bootlicker middle managers who you love to hate. Think of Office Space or Better Off Ted but with a much bigger dose of nihilism, and you've got the vibe of Corporate.
Creator: Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman | Cast: Lance Reddick, Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Corporate satire

The X-Files

Nathan's notes: The weirder it gets, the better it is.
Nathan's rating:
Before they went off in their respective directions to play sexed-up roles in Californication and Sex Education, respectively, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson became household names in The X-Files. The show has a classic unlikely duo foundation, with doubting Dana Scully (Anderson) and believer Fox Mulder. Sure, you've seen shows with FBI Agents before, but you haven't seen one where the detectives' job is to investigate strange and supernatural happenings. Paramount Plus has all seasons of The X-Files to binge, including the latter two in the 2010s. While some of the effects in the older seasons haven't aged well, the monster-of-the-week mysteries, overarching storylines, and the iconic dynamic between Mulder and Scully is well worth a revisit or first-time watch.
Creator: Chris Carter | Cast: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi | Language: English | Rating: PG–MA15+
Genre: Thriller

Deadwood

Nathan's notes: The best Western on Paramount Plus is a timely steal from HBO Max.
Nathan's rating:
While HBO Max has Deadwood: The Movie, it doesn't have the beloved Western series that preceded it. For that, you'll want a Paramount Plus subscription. I've just finished a rewatch, and Deadwood is as compelling as ever thanks to clever writing and a cast of unique characters. It starts off primarily as the plight of ex-sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), who's eager to leave the law behind and make an honest living in the dishonest town of Deadwood with his business partner Sol Star (John Hawkes). But the better story arcs are the ones that follow shady Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), foul-mouthed Trixie (Paula Malcomson), and the always entertaining trainwreck Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert). Deadwood was made at the peak of HBO storytelling, so prep for plenty of swearing, nudity, and hard-hitting violence.
Creator: David Milch | Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Western drama

Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head

Nathan's notes: The laughing loser and his snickering sidekick still have plenty of laughs to give.
Nathan's rating:
If you're a fan of the original Beavis and Butt-Head, you can find a selection of punchy 11-minute episodes on Paramount Plus (the rest are reportedly coming, though). But Paramount Plus is the only place to stream the iconic animated comedy's 2022 rebirth. With a slight title tweak to Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head, that new name tells you a lot of what you need to know. Mike Judge is back, both as creator and the respective voices of television's biggest tittering teenagers (and a whole lot of other kooky characters). If you wanna do it right, start with the Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe flick. Then jump into the two seasons (and counting) of the show. Instead of mocking or rocking to whatever's on TV, the deadbeat duo now riff on YouTube and TikTok videos. What they watch might've changed, but the reaction comedy is still consistently entertaining.
Creator: Mike Judge | Cast: Mike Judge, Kristofor Brown, Tracy Grandstaff | Language: English | Rating: M–MA15+
Genre: Animated comedy

Nathan for You

Nathan's notes: Nathan Fielder's deadpan delivery makes his 'professional' recommendations all the more hilarious.
Nathan's rating:
Before there was The Rehearsal, there was Nathan for You. Nathan Fielder puts his business degree to good use in a docuseries like no other, and by "good" I mean "good for laughs". Fielder's deadpan delivery only makes it all the funnier when he earnestly encourages struggling business owners to get on board with his far-fetched ideas. While the prospect of a turd-flavoured frozen yoghurt is unlikely to become a menu staple, it is a recipe for hilarity. Some episodes will make you cringe. Other times you'll be in disbelief at how many people take Fielder seriously. But mostly you'll be laughing at just how far Fielder is willing to go in an unforgettable comedy series that makes for great viewing today, especially if you're a fan of The Rehearsal.
Creator: Nathan Fielder, Michael Koman | Cast: Nathan Fielder, Solomon Flores, Anthony Filosa | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Docuseries comedy
