HBO itself might be better be better known for premium television series like Succession and Game of Thrones but its parent company Warner Bros. is primarily known for its blockbuster movies. These days, those chart-topping flicks make their way to the company's streaming service, HBO Max, shortly after their theatrical run.
Though still relatively new in Australia, the HBO Max movie library has grown a lot since launch, making it increasingly difficult to decide on what to watch. Let us cure that choice paralysis with our list of the best movies currently streaming on HBO Max in Australia.
7 Days in Hell

Brodie's brief: It’s basically Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers but somehow more erotic.
Brodie's rating:
7 Days in Hell is a comedy that’s obscurity baffles me. Released near the peak of both The Lonely Island and Kit Harington’s popularity, 7 Days in Hell is a tennis mockumentary for modern audiences that still holds up a decade later.
The movie pits a McEnroe-type American player, Aaron Williams – the forgotten, adopted sibling of Serena and Venus, played by Andy Samberg – against thick-as-a-brick child prodigy Charles Poole (Kit Harrington) in a gruelling seven-day tennis rally that takes place during the 2001 Wimbledon Championships.
Told in the style of an ESPN documentary, 7 Days in Hell is a compilation of interviews, TMZ footage and, occasionally, some tennis. It's outrageously silly and is reminiscent of classic mockumentaries from Christopher Guest, such as Best in Show and This is Spinal Tap.
Director: Jake Szymanski | Writer: Murray Miller
Cast: Andy Samberg, Kit Harington, Fred Armisen, Karen Gillian, Lena Dunham, Jon Hamm (Narrator)
Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Sports mockumentary
Available on: HBO Max
Weapons

Christie's critique: The reason I'm subscribed to HBO Max.
Christie's rating:
The film that finally convinced me to sign up to HBO Max, Weapons is an eerie psychological horror with an ending you won’t see coming.
Julia Garner (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Ozark) stars as Mrs Gandy, a school teacher, who arrives at work one day to discover all but one child in her class have mysteriously disappeared. At 2:17am exactly, every other child got out of bed, ran from the house and never returned.
Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the mind behind Barbarian, this film is told from the perspectives of several key characters before, during and after the mass disappearances to piece together what truly happened.
Writer/Director: Zach Cregger
Cast: Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Amy Madigan, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Alden Ehrenreich, Cary Christopher, Whitmer Thomas
Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Horror-mystery

Sinners

Brodie's brief: The Devil went down to Mississippi
Brodie's rating:
Writer-director Ryan Coogler reunites with Michael B. Jordan, who takes on a dual role as twin brothers Stack and Smoke.
Returning home after working for Chicago gangsters, the WWI vets use their recent earnings to turn an old sawmill into a lively juke joint with help from family and old friends. But on opening night, the celebration is interrupted when a group of strangers, lured by the blues, show up uninvited with an insatiable appetite.
To call Sinners a horror film feels like an injustice. It has some fantastic scares but it’s so much more than that; a story about family, honour and the transformative power of soulful music. - Brodie Fogg
Writer/Director: Ryan Coogler
Cast: Michael B. Jordan (x2), Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Miles Caton, Li Jun Li

Superman (2025)

Christie's critique: A promising first flight for the new DC cinematic universe.
Christie's rating:
At this point, Superman feels as recycled as Spider-Man or James Bond. But 2025’s instalment of the epic superhero was a huge success, despite Henry Cavill being passed over for the title role.
David Corenswet (Pearl) takes up the mantle in James Gunn’s latest superhero flick alongside Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards, The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Hoult’s eye-watering $2 million salary for his role as Lex Luthor is very well spent - his portrayal of the villain is (pardon the pun) something out of this world. - Christie Graham
Writer/Director: James Gunn
Cast: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, María Gabriela de Faría Chacón, Nathan Fillion, Isabella Merced, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennet, Wendell Pierce, Mikaela Hoover, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell

Dune: Parts 1 & 2

Brodie's brief: LISAN AL-GAIB!
Brodie's rating:
In 2021, Denis Villeneuve did the seemingly impossible when he adapted the first half of Frank Herbert's Dune for the big screen with very few complaints. Two-and-a-half years later, he covered the back half of the book with Dune: Part Two to great success, paving the way for a third part, the inevitable adaptation of Herbert's second book, Dune Messiah.
Once you're finished streaming Dune Parts 1 and 2 on HBO Max, you can give the TV series Dune: Prophecy a crack ahead of Dune: Part Three, which is expected to release in 2026.
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh

Genre: Spicy sci-fi

Creed

Brodie's brief: Hold me now.
Brodie's rating:
If double Michael B. Jordan in Sinners wasn’t enough to quench your thirst for the talented young actor, you can follow it up with the Rocky spin-off series Creed. In Creed, director Ryan Coogler (Sinners) brings the Italian Stallion Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) out of retirement to train the illegitimate son of the late, great Apollo Creed.
Growing up without a father, young Adonis Johnson ends up in a juvenile detention centre, where his short temper and fast fists become his best defence and biggest problem.
Despite being scorned by the affair, Apollo Creed's widow, Mary Anne, takes the young Adonis under her wing. To her utter dismay, Adonis grows into a skillful boxer.
After taking a beating in Tijuana, Adonis travels to Philadelphia in search of his father's friend, Rocky Balboa. What follows is an underdog tale that hits just as hard as the original Rocky films did in their heyday. -Brodie Fogg
Creed (2015) and Creed II (2018) are available to stream on HBO Max. Creed III (2023), however, is currently exclusive to Stan.

Deadwood: The Movie

Brodie's brief: Picking up where we left off.
Brodie's rating:
Revivals of long-dead TV series rarely meet the expectations of starved fans, but Deadwood: The Movie might be the exception. When HBO’s Deadwood was unceremoniously cancelled in 2006 after its third season, fans were robbed of closure on several dangling plot threads. Thirteen years later, Deadwood: The Movie gave it the send-off it always deserved. It doesn’t get to tie up every loose thread, but it does focus on the fates of the series' most beloved characters.
Despite the decade-plus gap, Deadwood: The Movie feels like a mid-series time jump, reviving the drama naturally and respectfully without dragging it out. - Brodie Fogg
The Deadwood TV series is essential viewing before checking out Deadwood: The Movie. Unfortunately, all three seasons of the TV series are on a completely different streaming service, Paramount Plus.
Director: Daniel Minahan | Writer: David Milch
Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Ian McShane, Paula Malcomson, W. Earl Brown, John Hawkes, Kim Dickens, Robin Weigert
Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Little yee, lotta haw
Available on: HBO Max
The Batman

Brodie's brief: Robert Battison is The Patman in DC's finest flick in years.
Brodie's rating:
Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17) as DC’s Dark Knight sounded like an insane choice when it was first announced. But it was just crazy enough to work. Pattinson plays a young Bruce Wayne early in his career as a caped crusader. He’s sullen, quick to anger and rocks those tiny sunglasses better than any other human on planet earth is capable of. When he’s not posturing for the public, Bruce Wayne is a pretty mopey character that you can only spend so much time with.
Thankfully, Pattinson is supported by an incredible cast, with Zoe Kravitz killing it as Catwoman and a caked-up Colin Farrell as Penguin - a character so endearing they gave him his own very successful spin-off series (also streaming on HBO Max).
Director: Matt Reeves | Writers: Matt Reeves & Peter Craig
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro

Genre: Sullen superhero stuff

Zodiac

Brodie's brief: Fincher's finest, I fink.
Brodie's rating:
It’s almost impossible to pick a favourite Fincher flick but Zodiac takes the cake for me, personally. It’s a movie that I shouldn’t necessarily love as much as I do. I’ve never been drawn to the crime genre, much less ones based on a true story. I also don’t have a very long attention span. But there’s just something about Zodiac’s molasses-like intrigue that pulls me in every single time.
It doesn't hurt that just about everyone in the movie gives a career-defining performance. Not just the names at the top of the bill, but the supporting cast too. I can’t think about Zodiac without remembering Chloë Sevigny, John Carroll Lynch, June Diane Raphael, Elias Koteas, Charles Fleischer, Anthony Edwards… the list goes on. - Brodie Fogg
Director: David Fincher
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Brian Cox, John Carroll Lynch

Troy

Brodie's brief: It's actually illegal to watch this movie with a shirt on.
Brodie's rating:
If you can barely contain your excitement for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, why not revisit the 2004 adaptation of Homer’s other Greek epic, The Iliad, while you wait.
The sword-and-sandal epic might not be a masterpiece but it sure is a whole lot of fun. Brad Pitt and Eric Bana are perfectly cast as Achilles and Hector. They’re also supported by a bananas cast, including Orlando Bloom as Paris (Hector’s dainty younger brother), Diane Kruger as Helen of Troy, Brian Cox as Agamemnon, King of the Greeks, and Sean Bean as Odysseus, King of Ithaca.
Nolan’s The Odyssey has cast Matt Damon as Odysseus, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon and Lupita Nyong’o as the one and only Helen of Troy. - Brodie Fogg
Director: Wolfgang Petersen | Writer: David Benioff
Cast: Brad Pitt, Rose Byrne, Eric Bana, Diane Kruger, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Saffron Burrows, Julie Christie, Peter O'Toole, Brendan Gleeson

Genre: Trojan-sized Greek epic

The Wedding Singer

Christie's critique: The Happy Madison classic that Carrie Fisher punched up.
Christie's rating:
When I say The Wedding Singer has everything, it GENUINELY has everything! The original Happy Madison Productions, Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler chemistry, funky 90s vibes, a killer soundtrack, quotable lines, a villain you love to hate, plus Billy freakin’ Idol.
Sandler stars as Robbie Hart, a wedding singer whose heart is broken by the wrong girl at the altar, of all places. As he spirals out of control, fate intervenes, introducing him to a wedding waitress, Julia (Barrymore). As Julia and Robbie grow closer, it’s clear they’re meant to be. But, plot twist, Julia is engaged to someone else.
The Wedding Singer explores love, heartbreak and then (spoilers, but you really should’ve seen it already) true love. Special shoutouts for bringing this film to life also go to Carrie Fisher, Judd Apatow, and Adam Sandler, who each worked uncredited on the script. - Christie Graham
Director: Frank Coraci | Writer: Tim Herlihy
Cast: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor, Matthew Glave, Allen Covert

Dunkirk

Brodie's brief: The shortest Christopher Nolan film to date will stick with you for years to come.
Brodie's rating:
I swear, on all that is holy and unholy, if I have to listen to one more person talk about how overrated Christopher Nolan is, I might just walk into the ocean. You’re all lucky to have Christopher Nolan, you ingrates.
Ahem, anyway. Of all the over- or underappreciated films of Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk is the one I’ve struggled to convince people to watch the most. Oh, they’re happy to sit through the sci-fi gobbledygook of Inception and Interstellar, but the moment you ask them to sit through a nail-biting war drama (that’s actually one of his shortest movies), you get crickets.
Dunkirk is a fairly straightforward story if you go in knowing there are three stories taking place, progressing at different rates for the length of the film. We follow the foot-soldier Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) over a week, Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance) and his little boat over a day, and Spitfire-flying pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy) over a single hour. If you know that going in, the movie makes a lot more sense.
Writer/Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy
