There are free streaming services in Australia that don't have any catches. Sign up for an account. Then get streaming, albeit with ads. But there are others that require external memberships, like Beamafilm and Hoopla, which both require an account with a participating library. And the same is true of Kanopy.
With the right participating university or public library membership, Kanopy streaming is free. But unlike Beamafilm and Hoopla, Kanopy has a big restrictive disclaimer when it comes to how much you can stream. Scroll on for everything you need to know about Kanopy in Australia.

What is Kanopy Australia?
Kanopy is the home of "thoughtful entertainment". In practical terms, that translates to a collection of 30,000+ movies, TV series, and documentaries. All of that with no subscription fees or ads. If that sounds too good to be true, well, you're right.
The first catch is that you need a membership with a participating library. In the grander scheme of things, that's not too much of an ask, and is easy enough if you're in the right areas. The bigger catch is how much you can stream on Kanopy is restricted by how many 'tickets' you have, and that's ultimately determined by what your library is willing to pay to cover per member.
While frustrating for frequent bingers, it must be a successful model given the company has been around since 2008 and has expanded from its Western Australian roots to a San Francisco headquarters. Today, Kanopy is available in Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle East.

Kanopy doesn't have a free trial because it doesn't need one. Instead, you need to have a membership with a participating academic or public library to access Kanopy for free. While that gets you free Kanopy streaming, you will be limited in the number of tickets available (which varies based on the library).
How much does Kanopy cost in Australia?
For users, Kanopy costs $0 to stream. But to stream on Kanopy, you need a membership with a participating academic or public library. There are hundreds of participating libraries in Australia, across Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Unfortunately, the Northern Territory and Tasmania don't have any eligible libraries according to the Kanopy 'Find Your Public Library' map page.
As long as you can get a membership with a participating academic or public library (there are 4,000+ around the world), you can stream content on Kanopy. Ultimately, the library will bear the cost of your streaming, but it's unclear how much they pay. Depending on their pricing model, libraries will either pay per use, pay a flat fee, or offer access to curated Kanopy content.
For my tests, I used a membership via the City of Canada Bay Library. While that seemingly gives me access to the full Kanopy library, I do have a 15-ticket limit per month. Once I use up all of those tickets, I have to wait for a reset at the start of the next month. If I don't use up all those tickets, they don't stack; each month starts with 15 Kanopy tickets. What complicates this system further is that it's not a straight swap of one ticket per movie, documentary, or episode streamed. A season of TV may use five tickets, while a movie could use two tickets.
To compound matters, ticket costs for content aren't always a predictable thing, so you probably want to plan your monthly streaming ahead of time. Once you start playing, you'll have 72 hours of access to a movie or five to seven days of access for a TV season. The exception to this rule is Kanopy Kids. Switching to this view offers unlimited streaming of content for younger kids (meant for ages two to eight).

Best internet plans for Kanopy
According to Kanopy, you only need 5Mbps of download speed to comfortably stream content. While you can install Kanopy on any supported device, you're only effectively allowed to stream to one device at a time. Because of this, you could use an NBN 25 or even an NBN 12 plan to stream Kanopy at home.
That said, we recommend starting comparisons with an NBN 50 plan because the extra download speed allows for better versatility on other devices in the home. If you live in a home that has multiple streaming devices, your download speed needs will stack as you add additional simultaneous streams. If you want uninterrupted streaming at full quality, NBN 50 is the way to go.

Kanopy FAQs
Is Kanopy US only?
No, Kanopy isn't only a US streaming service. You can stream Kanopy from a participating library in Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, the Middle East, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
Do I need a library card to use Kanopy?
Yes, you need a library membership to access Kanopy. Use the 'Find Your Public Library' map tool on the Kanopy website to find an eligible library near you.
How do I watch Kanopy?
Kanopy has a decent range of supported devices, including web browsers (on Windows, Mac, or Chromebook), mobile devices, and smart TV apps. Here's a full list of Kanopy apps and devices:
- Amazon Fire tablets (FireOS 6 and newer)
- Android phones and tablets (Android 7.1 and newer))
- Android TV and Google TV (Android 7.1 and newer)
- Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox web browsers (latest versions)
- Apple TV (tvOS 12.0 and newer)
- Fire TV (FireOS 6 and newer)
- iPhones and iPads (iOS 14.0 and newer)
- Roku (RokuOS 12.5 and newer)
- Samsung TV (Tizen 6.5 and newer)
Kanopy also notes that you can stream its content library via Chromecast and AirPlay.
Does Kanopy have ads?
No, Kanopy doesn't have any ads. Instead, its monetisation is covered by academic and public libraries, so that its users can stream for free.
What features does Kanopy have?
The biggest unique feature of Kanopy is also its most limiting: the tickets system. For my account, I have 15 tickets to use per month. That's all well and good if I only stream content that uses an odd number of tickets, or a mix of odd and even. But with an abundance of two-ticket and four-ticket choices, you can be left in the lurch with content you want to watch but no tickets left to watch it with until next month.
Linked to that limitation is how long you get access. Once you start playing a Kanopy movie, you have 72 hours to finish watching it. That's pretty reasonable for movies, but entire seasons of TV give either five days or seven days of access. You'll want to plan your binge accordingly, depending on the season length of any TV series you want to watch on Kanopy.
As you might expect from a free streaming service, there's no offline viewing of content, and Kanopy also requires you to always have an internet connection to stream its catalogue. If you've used any other modern streaming service, Kanopy's layout will be familiar. There's a carousel of promoted content at the top, followed by a perpetually updating scroll of horizontal content categories. You can create playlists of content but, outside of telling you combined running time, playlists aren't overly useful.
Does Kanopy allow password sharing?
While I couldn't find any official statements from Kanopy about password sharing, I did find users suggesting that there are some geoblocking measures to stop password sharing. You're also only allowed a single Kanopy login at a time, so potential password sharing would have to be timed. Where possible, instead of sharing your Kanopy password, encourage your friends and family members to sign up for an eligible library membership so they can stream for free.
How is Kanopy different from Netflix?
Kanopy is different from Netflix primarily because it doesn't have a subscription fee. Instead, you need a membership with a participating library to access Kanopy. In terms of content, Netflix has a larger library of more popular movies and TV shows than Kanopy.
