Despite the rise of online streaming services like Netflix and Stan, Foxtel is still a popular pay TV pick for homes looking to access more than just the 30-odd free-to-air channels available these days. Signing up for Foxtel grants you a basic channels package but there are a range of other packages you can optionally add to access even more content.
- Watch AFL, NRL and F1 live in 4K Ultra HD

*$60 per month on a 12-mth plan. Min. cost $720. New customers only. Offer ends 30 June 2026.
How much is Foxtel?
How much you pay for Foxtel is ultimately determined by how many channel bundles you add to your subscription and how long you commit for. The basic Foxtel Plus base package costs $78 per month, whether you pay monthly or yearly. Foxtel Movies costs $103 per month, while the Sports package costs $108 each month. If you want to bundle those channel packages together, the Sport + Movies package costs $133 a month. Every Foxtel iQ plan also includes a complimentary 12-month HBO Max Basic subscription (usually $11.99 per month).
The mother of all Foxtel plans is the Platinum Plus bundle, which costs $150 per month. A Standard Netflix subscription (usually $20.99) is included with the Platinum Plus bundle but can be added to any bundle for a $17 per month fee. Don't need Netflix? All good, just opt for Sport + Movies, which is just Platinum Plus minus the $17 Netflix fee.
There are also frequent promotional pricing periods that heavily discount the first year of most Foxtel bundles for those who sign up for a 12-month contract.
Check out Foxtel's plans here:
Note: No-contract plans are not eligible for discounts and incur a $35 connection fee and then
the individual cost per box which is $199 for an iQ5 self-install kit.

Foxtel vs. Foxtel Now
Foxtel offers a set-top box experience, while Foxtel Now is a no-contract subscription streaming service that you can stream without a Foxtel iQ box. Foxtel Now plans are cheaper and come with a 10-day free trial period. They don't include any hardware, so don't incur any additional set-up or hardware fees, but also don't offer 4K content or program recording.
What's on Foxtel?
What you get on Foxtel or Foxtel Now depends on the channel package or packages you buy. Whether you opt for a premade Foxtel bundle or build your own, it starts with Foxtel Plus, which includes more than 50 channels of entertainment, drama, lifestyle content, documentary and reality TV. Movies adds more than 1,000 on-demand movies via nine HD movie channels, and one 4K movie channel, while Sports adds more than 50 sports across nine live channels.
The Sports + Movies package comes with Foxtel Plus, Sports and Movies packages. Finally, Platinum Plus includes everything in the previous packages alongside a Standard Netflix subscription (valued at $17.99 per month).
For a limited time, all Foxtel plans also come with a bonus 12 months of HBO Max Basic with Ads (usually $11.99 per month).
If that's not enough content for you, you can also purchase digital titles via the Foxtel Store, plus the Foxtel iQ boxes support free-to-air streaming services like ABC iView, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and 10 (formerly 10 play).
You can, of course, access many streaming services through an internet-connected iQ box. Apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Stan, Disney Plus, Apple TV, Paramount Plus and YouTube. But access to those paid subscriptions won't be included in your plan (unless you bundle Netflix and HBO Max).
Foxtel iQ4 box vs. iQ5 box

New Foxtel bundles come with the newer iQ5 box. If you've already got an iQ4 you can upgrade by changing your subscription in your account settings.
The main difference is that the iQ5 can be self-installed. This means you don't need to pay a technician to come out and set it up. It also has a smaller form factor than the iQ4 and, as a result, one less tuner, which means you can only record up to two channels at once instead of three.
Here's a comparison of their features:
| Features | iQ4 | iQ5 (with hard drive) |
|---|---|---|
| Recording space | 1TB | 1TB |
| Recording | up to 3 at once | up to 2 at once |
| Foxtel Voice Remote | ||
| Start Over catch-up | ||
| Ultra HD | ||
| Access to streaming apps | ||
| Rent movies, TV shows and Main Event titles | ||
| Pause and rewind live free-to-air TV | ||
| Series link and team link | ||
| Automatically plays next episode | ||
| Dedicated Sports menu |
While both Foxtel boxes come with spacious storage, the iQ5 has an external hard drive that can be detached. As long as a Foxtel iQ4 box is connected to the internet, it can access the Foxtel Store alongside the iQ5. Both the iQ4 and iQ5 can also record up to 45 hours of 4K movies or TV.
What are the alternatives to Foxtel?
By default, Foxtel is a traditional pay TV service that delivers content via the web and satellite with a physical set-top box, which then hooks into your TV. You also get a Foxtel remote with voice commands.
In terms of competitors, Fetch TV is the closest because it also has a set-top box, even if it uses internet streaming rather than a coaxial network, it still offers traditionally priced channel packs. But there are plenty of big-name premium streaming services that also offer a range of TV and movies to watch.
Chief among those is Netflix, followed by Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Stan, Apple TV and BritBox. Major services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus and Stan offered tiered pricing based on stream fidelity (HD, 4K, etc.), the number of simultaneous streams, and whether they include ad breaks or not. Services like Prime Video, BritBox and Apple TV offer a single plan that's either charged monthly or at a discounted annual rate with a set number of simultaneous streams baked into the pricing. With that said, Prime Video customers now have to pay an additional $3 per month to remove advertisements.
For those who like the Foxtel offering but want to cut the cord, there are also Foxtel Now, HBO Max, Binge and Kayo Sports to consider. Foxtel Now is effectively the digital version of traditional Foxtel channel packages while Binge is a streaming service comprised of most of the key movie and TV content from Foxtel. Meanwhile, Kayo Sports is effectively Foxtel's Sports HD package separated into two pricing structures. There's a $30 per month Standard HD plan for one device and a $40 per month 4K Premium plan for two devices.
You can see how these various streaming services compare here:
What is Max (HBO Max) on Foxtel?
There are actually two answers to that, confusingly. Channel 806 is Foxtel's Max music channel. In 2025, Max and the Country Music Channel (CMC) replaced MTV as Foxtel's go-to music video destination.
Then there's Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service Max, which launched in Australia in early 2025 and subsequently changed its name back to HBO Max a few months later. When the service first launched in Australia, it took a lot of its content (like Game of Thrones) back from Foxtel and Binge. To make up for it, Foxtel announced it would offer 12 months of HBO Max Basic with Ads for free to all customers on iQ plans.
