Are your Optus speed test results not what you expected? The internet speeds you should expect on your Optus plan will depend on what kind of connection you have. ADSL speeds will naturally be slower than NBN, for example.

When it comes to ADSL, the primary factor that affects your internet speed is your distance from your local telephone exchange. The longer the length of copper connecting your home or business to your exchange, the more speed you lose.

Optus cable speeds tend to be more consistent. A standard Optus cable plan has a maximum speed of 50Mbps, but you can pay $30 per more month for a boost to 100Mbps.

NBN connections are the most susceptible to speed variance: there's a whole range range of factors that can affect the speed of your NBN. These include the distance of your home from the Node (if you have a Fibre to the Node connection), congestion on the network and the condition/capabilities of your modem router and other home equipment.

If you're on an Optus NBN plan and the speeds reported by our test don't bear any similarity to the speeds discussed above, contact Optus to discuss possible solutions.

It's important to note that there are many possible causes for sub-standard NBN speeds. Some connections using Fibre to the Node technology cannot achieve typical speeds offered by plans during to physical limitations of the connection. If you are on a Fixed Wireless NBN connection, you will also be limited in the speed of plan you can choose. For other causes, see our troubleshooting guide on why your NBN is slow for more information. See our guide if you want to read about other internet providers or use our plan comparison tool to change your internet plan. Or if you prefer to ditch the National Broadband Network altogether, see our guide on NBN alternatives.

Optus Speed Test FAQs

Depending on what you use the internet for and how many people are connected, a "the right internet speed" can vary. Regular web browsing, for instance, may require 1-2 Mbps, to stream video in Standard Definition (SD) may require upwards of 3Mbps or High Definition Video (HD) upwards of 5Mbps. To stream really high quality video in 4K, you will need at least 25Mbps. If you're connected to the NBN, we'd typically recommend an Standard Plus Plan (NBN 50) at a minimum to ensure there's enough bandwidth for everyone in your household.
Internet speed tests like the one on this page can provide a great estimate as to how fast your Optus NBN, cable, or ADSL connection is. Before starting your speed test, try to restart your modem and router, pause all internet use, restart your computer, and clear your web browser’s cache to maximise the accuracy of the test. If you're connected to a wireless network, you'll want to run this test with your device in close proximity of your modem or router.
Typically less than a minute!
There are plenty of reasons your Optus internet speeds could be slow, and as such, there are plenty of options for trying improve your internet speeds. Moving your router to a more central location, adding a WiFi extender, and simply turning your modem off and on again can all potentially improve your internet speeds if you're having issues. It's also definitely worth getting in touch with Telstra to try and diagnose the problem. If you're still not impressed, compare faster internet plan options using our search tool. This, of course, will all depend on the type of technology you use to connect to the internet: in some cases, even changing provider won't do anything to improve your speeds.
Download speed refers to the rate at which you are able to download from the internet (streaming video, loading a website) and upload speed refers to the speed that you can put content on the internet (sharing photos on Facebook, adding a document to Google Drive). For more information about NBN download and upload speed see our guide.
If your internet speeds seem slower than normal, you may want to consider reducing the number of devices connected or limiting the number of people using your WiFi or buying a better modem or router. The number of people and devices as well as what each person is using the internet for can have a big impact on the relative speed of your internet. Other factors that can influence internet speed include: the location of your router, the number of applications on each device that are using the internet, and the type of modem or router you have.
