Nokia

Nokia Corporation is a Finnish multinational communications and information technology company, specialising in mobile phone and portable IT devices. Formerly the world’s largest mobile phone maker, in the last five years Nokia has suffered a fall in market share due to the rise of rival smartphone producers, notably Apple’s iPhone range and competitors using the Android operating system; the company now is in second place behind Samsung. In order to combat this, Nokia entered into a partnership with Microsoft in 2011, in which all future Nokia smartphones would use Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system. Considering that the brand can trace its origins back to a wood pulp mill opened in 1865 in south-western Finland, its status today as a company employing over 120,000 workers across more than 120 countries is impressive. However, the company itself has admitted that the rapidly changing landscape of communications technology has proved a serious challenge in what has become a fiercely competitive market.

Nokia is one of several communications companies to have patent infringement disputes with Apple, which has led to a settlement in Nokia’s favour and agreement between the two to cross-licence certain patents from 2011 onwards.

Smartphones

As of 2011, Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft led to a cease in manufacturing new phones supporting the old Symbian platform. Symbian provided Nokia users with plenty of features, but had been criticised as being harder to use than competing iOS and Android operating systems – overall, Nokia declared it to be ‘non-competitive’. While the Nokia N8 is Symbian-operated, Nokia’s Lumia range of smartphones are exclusively Windows Phone supported. The Lumia line offers exclusive applications not available to other devices which operate on Windows Phone, including Nokia Drive, a free GPS navigator, and Nokia Music which includes over 15 million music tracks and streaming radio.

Nokia’s well-known slogan is ‘Connecting People’ and this reflected in the company’s mission statement: to build great mobile products that enable billions of people worldwide to enjoy more of what life has to offer, and to achieve this in an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment. The company’s own website lists in detail their efforts to promote sustainability, human rights and ethics, and Nokia has publicly committed itself to the United Nations Global Compact, which outlines responsible business practices concerning labour, environmental impact and anti-corruption. Nokia, like Samsung, is listed in Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics.

Customer Service and Product Support

Nokia offer online troubleshooting, live chat and a support forum through their website. A call centre is in operation seven days a week, and the ‘Nokia Care’ app is available to download free for selected devices. Customers covered by warranty are also able to drop damaged products off at any Australia Post outlet, to be sent to authorised technicians for assessment free of charge.
