It can’t be easy to set up a new mobile service provider in Australia these days. There are dozens of competitors and they all compete on the same things: price and data. How do you stand out from the pack?
OVO Mobile launched in 2016 and arrived on the scene with an interesting proposition. What if you offered data-packed plans and added in a data-free video streaming service as well? It’s an interesting concept and while the streaming service is still in its infancy, it has the potential to be something that is both unique and very good.
One of the defining features of the OVO service is that it is prepaid only. No phone plan contracts and no monthly bills. You can have your account automatically renewed each 30 days for convenience, but if you hit your limits the services will cut off. For most of the OVO plans this only affects the data portion of the service as the plans come with unlimited calls and SMS.
International calls and overseas roaming are both available, but customers need to buy prepaid packs of OVO Extras credit to make use of them. This is actually a pretty good idea and will save you from overspending, even if the rates are quite expensive.

How we rate OVO Mobile
How OVO Mobile compares on pricing
If you’re looking for a basic phone plan, with no need for international inclusions or other extras, then the OVO plan range is outstanding value. So much so that we awarded them the 2017 Money Magazine award for best high use phone plan (which WhistleOut judges).
As we mentioned above, the SIM Only phone plan market is cutthroat, there is very little to separate the plans in terms of how much you pay and what you get. But OVO stays at the head of the pack with lots of data included in its higher value plans - the $35 and $45 options. At both price points, OVO is currently 2GB ahead of its nearest competitor, so if you are looking for lots of data, OVO should be high on your consideration list.
Of course, a part of the reason why the plans are so cheap is that they are really bare bones prepaid offers. If you need anything other than calls and data, the extras might add up and it could be that you were best to look elsewhere.

What to know about OVO Mobile coverage
OVO Mobile operates on the Optus 4G Plus network, so anywhere you can get an Optus signal you will be fine using the OVO service.
The Optus network now covers 98.5% of the population of Australia, and a majority of us live under the umbrella of 4G coverage, with 3G signals servicing the rest of the network footprint in regional and more remote areas.
Of course, as a prepaid service provider, there are no contracts with OVO, so you’d be free to test the service out and switch to someone else if the coverage is poor. The process of switching can be as fast as a couple of minutes, so there is very little time or risk involved in moving to a new provider.
What to keep in mind when comparing OVO Mobile
- Prepaid only - the idea of a prepaid safety net -- protecting you unwanted excess usage charges -- will be a huge drawcard for many people, but others will prefer the 'always-on' option of a monthly bill. It's up to you.
- OVOplay video streaming - if you love the sports included in the service (currently V8 supercars, Audi Sports Racing and Gymnastics) then this should be an exciting inclusion. You can watch the content anywhere on your phone, or log into the website on a laptop. All free, and all without chewing into your mobile data.
- Family Zone cyber safety - this is a bit of a strange addition, but it might fit the bill in your household. OVO customers get free access to monitor one handset with an eligible OVO plan, and with it parents can block content from their kid's phones, monitor their usage and set sleep times which will block access to certain services at night.
