TPG is in the process of building Australia's fourth mobile network, but to properly test a mobile network, you need customers. If you're interested in being one of the first to trial TPG's mobile network, the telco is now taking registrations, and it has a pretty unique offer.
$9.99 per month will get you "unlimited" data, with 1GB of high speed data per day. If you exceed this, you'll be capped to speeds of 1Mbps for the remainder of the day (0.5Mbps slower than Telstra and Vodafone's unlimited plans).
Initial subscribers will get their first six months free, and customers who stay with the plan after the six-month period will then pay the $9.99 with no lock-in contract.
While it's not quite accurate to say that this plan offers 30GB of high-speed data per month due to the lack of flexibility, the 1GB of high speed per day restriction could be palatable enough for those looking for save money.
The other big catch is TPG's network, or lack thereof. TPG is still in the process of building its mobile network, and coverage will initially be limited to CBDs (and surrounding suburbs) in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Brisbane. TPG is aiming to cover 80% of the Australian population within its first three years of operation, but even that is a far cry from the coverage offered by the likes of Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone.
But if that's not a deterrent, you can register your interest in TPG's mobile network here. Priority will however be given to existing TPG, iiNet, and Internode broadband customers. TPG expects to start inviting customers onto its network in the second half of the year.
Planned coverage for TPG's initial mobile network trial will cover the following areas:
