If you monitor the way many Australians are using their smartphone nowadays, you’ll notice a big shift away from traditional calling and SMS messaging towards data-heavy tasks, like web browsing and social media. Luckily, the various Aussie telcos are watching this trend too and there is now a range of plans with big data inclusions at a reasonable monthly rate.
To find these plans, we’ll limit our search to BYO-phone plans with 10GB data or more. All plans listed are available on a month to month basis.
The cost of data's gone down lately, which means you can easily get over 10GB for as little as $40. Wow!
Prepaid plans with big data
Just because you prefer to control your mobile spend with prepaid recharge vouchers doesn't mean you need to miss out on some of the big data plans. Nowadays all the major telcos have great value prepaid plans, and a number of the smaller telcos deserve to be considered too.
How much data do you need?
This is the million-dollar question, and the answer varies greatly from person to person. We've covered this topic in much greater detail in our article "mobile data usage guide", but some general guidelines include the following considerations:
- How much data have you recently used? Check several recent phone bills and try to calculate your average usage based on recent patterns.
- Consider how you plan to use your mobile internet data. Some activities, like email, Twitter and general web browsing don't use much data, while YouTube and Spotify music streaming will use a lot more.
