CHOICE campaign calls for an Australian Netflix
Summary: CHOICE magazine is calling for content providers to give Australians fair, affordable access to IPTV, like Netflix in the US, and shows you how to get it all legally in the meantime.
Consumer advocacy magazine CHOICE has started a campaign calling for better web TV services in Australia, and is calling for interested Aussies to join the crusade.
To hammer home the dire state of IPTV services in Australia, CHOICE has created a simple infographic (below) showing the differences between what's available in the US, like Netflix, and similar, lesser offering in Australia: Quickflix and Foxtel. The image points not only to there being less content on Australian TVs, but to a huge disparity in price.
In making its case, CHOICE includes a tutorial for how Australians can circumvent geo-blocking restrictions for popular overseas services. These techniques, which give access to sites, primarily Netflix, Hulu and international TV broadcaster catch-up services, are legal and some are free to use. Once your local IP is hidden (usually by assigning your connection an international address) you are free to sign up to these services and access this content.
"Australians are discriminated against when it comes to accessing content, release windows and price. CHOICE thinks this should change," writes Madison Cartwright in the CHOICE campaign article.
"The movie and TV industry must adapt to cater to how and when consumers want to view their entertainment."
