"A perfect blend of design, features and performance, the Arc proves that you needn't sacrifice power for design, or design for features and connectivity, but that smartphones are best when designers find a balance between each equally important element.

"While the arc comes with a relatively standard 1GHz processor, you do get an extremely responsive device with more than enough horsepower for fluid multi-tasking. Web browsing was generally speedy, with pages loading in a breeze. Like on most high-end smartphones, the general navigational experience was generally smooth with no lags and crashes, aided by a receptive touchscreen.

" Fixed to the back of the Arc is an 8MP shooter which will not only shoot top-notch photos, it will also shoot 720p HD video with continuous autofocus which is a pretty big deal.

"Sony Ericsson claims the Reality display increases contrast and sharpness for image viewing and video playback, and we can confirm it is one of the best screens we've seen on an Android phone. Colours are bright, contrast is outstanding and its performance in direct sunlight is impressive. The only downsides are its poor viewing angles and the lack of an automatic brightness setting.

"We said it in our introduction - this is a sexy phone. At just 8.7mm in the middle, which gradually becomes 10mm at both ends, it feels waif-like in the hand in the best way possible. Without fail, everybody who held this phone commented on the slickness of design.

"There’s one other catch with the innards worthy of note: the Xperia Arc is packing surprisingly little on board storage. Around 512MB in fact, which is far short of what rivals can offer. It’s a bit of an issue for apps that don’t support SD card installation, and could mean you run out of space, but if you’re that much of an app obsessive, you’ll probably be wanting something a bit more powerful anyway.

"The wide-screen aspect ratio of the screen is another plus. Movies play without any black bars. If you have small hands, you'll probably also find the long, thin handset is easier to grasp than other phones with similarly sized screens.

"Battery life is always a point of interest and through our testing we’ve been able to get though an average day with the Xperia Arc. That’s a positive point, but like all devices of this type, if you head out the door for a busy day on your phone, you can expect to need to top it up.

"Few things curb our enthusiasm as much as overly generic phones that try to be all things to all people and the Arc is commendably distant from that group.
