Apple Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs and sells consumer electronics, computer software and personal computers. Originally famous for its signature Macintosh computer line, revenue from personal computers has been eclipsed by its range of hand-held devices including the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, its headquarters are in Cupertino California. Apple Inc. is publicly traded and is one of the most profitable companies in the world; it is the largest publicly traded company by market capitalisation.

Smartphones

Apple’s iPhone line of smartphones was first unveiled in 2007. The iPhone was launched as not just a phone; emphasis was placed on its ability to function as a video camera, camera phone, and portable media player. It features email and web browsing capabilities, Wi-Fi connectivity and a multi-touch screen with a virtual keyboard. It uses Apple’s operating system and both third party and Apple application software can be purchased from the ‘App Store’, which features over 500,000 applications.

The iPhone has proven to be exceedingly popular and accounts for around 40% of Apple’s revenue. Although there are strong similarities between the product and Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone line (as made evident by the continued legal battle between the companies over copyright and intellectual property infringement), Apple’s iconic branding has made the iPhone more of a ‘household’ name than its competitors. Upon release of the iPhone 4s, over one million models were sold in the first 24 hours.

If you’re in the market for a smartphone, here are some reactions to Apple’s iPhone line from online reviews:

“Taken as a stand-alone smartphone, the iPhone 4s is up there with the best of them, but no other maker offers the integrated ecosystem of iCloud and iTunes. If you need a new phone, and possibly a personal helper, it’d definitely worth a look.” Steve Duncombe, Choice

“It’s what you do with an iPhone that gives it its edge. The win for Apple is still in its App store. Quantity has slipped from its grasp, but it remains the standard for browsing and for quality.” Seamus Byrne, CNET

“Undoubtedly, its iPhone and iPad are still at the top of their respective categories. Only a fool would claim that any other devices had access to such a rich catalogue of apps.” Paddy Smith, PC Authority

Tablets

The iPad is Apple’s tablet computer line. Primarily, it’s a platform for audio-visual media, enabling web browsing, email and social networking, movies, music, games, e-books and other applications available through the App Store. Connectivity wise, it utilises either Wi-Fi or both Wi-Fi and cellular data (depending on the model) and Bluetooth. Like the iPhone it runs on the iOS operating system, and runs both its own and iPhone applications. The iPad first went on sale in 2010 and subsequently was listed as one of Time’s 50 Best Inventions of that year.

As well as iTunes, it also supports music creation programs; in December 2010 Gorillaz released The Fall, the first ‘iPad album’ which was created and recorded almost exclusively with the device.

Here’s some critical responses to the iPad from around the web:

“Dozens of would-be iPads have come and, in many cases, gone. But the surviving rivals still sell in minuscule numbers compared with the iPad, and that’s not likely to change now.” David Prague, NY Times

“Apple’s vision is that we’re in a period where many tasks we previously performed with computers will be transferred to new, different, less computer devices. The iPad, like its brother the iPhone, is ushering in a new world.” Jason Snell, PC World

“Apple’s greatest strength has always been fusing together some headline features with an OS that just works, and will appeal to the largest amount of people.” Gareth Beavis, TechRadar

Company Values and Vision

Apple’s mission statement describes the company as being committed to bringing the best personal computing experience to students, educators, creative professionals and consumers around the world. However, the company has come under scrutiny for issues such dubious labour practices and apparent environmental destruction, and has been accused of being overly litigious and generally anti-competitive towards rival companies.

Customer Service and Support

Along with their online store, Apple own and operate 370 plus retail stores worldwide, in which they sell Apple hardware, software and accessories, offer tech support and repairs, and run free workshops available to customers. Apple also offer phone and email support and an extensive online library of tutorials and manuals.
