Here's a quick wrap of the iPhone 5 announcement this morning. Alex will cover all the specifics in more detail, but you're waking up to the new iPhone this morning and it is called iPhone 5. You'll be able to get the iPhone 5 on a 4G plan in Australia from Friday the 21st of September!
Here's what you need to know...
Firstly, there's no radical departures from previous iPhones and the new iPhone looks very similar. The tone of the unveiling was given away by the quote used in the opening, referencing an excerpt from Time Magazine in 2007 which said the iPhone was 'the phone that has changed phones for ever'. This indicated that Apple are already in a good place with their iPhone range and they are not going to throw everything out and start again.
A slightly larger display, whilst keep the existing physical width at the same width as the existing iPhone 4S
It is definitely called the iPhone 5 AND amazingly the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 will stay on sale.
The display is 4 inches diagonally, BUT it is not physically wider than existing iPhone 4S. It is slightly taller.
It is thinner than the existing iPhone 4S at 7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than the current model and they've packed more technology in a smaller space.
Importantly, the iPhone will be extremely fast and will support LTE 4G on Optus, Telstra, and Virgin Mobile (Optus network).
Gone is the glass back, so you won't shatter this phone and perhaps less of a reason to get a case as they've spent so long perfecting the look of this device. Here's what Apple said about their latest phone...
"It is an absolute jewel. It is the most beautiful product we have ever made, bar none."
Battery life has been improved. You'll now get 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing. 10 hours on WiFi browsing
The camera is still an 8-megapixel sensor, a 5-element lens and f/2.4 aperture which will take better photos than the iPhone 4S and it has been improved for low light:
"It's really powerful to deliver amazing low-light photo capture. And it's 40% faster image capture!"
Importantly, Apple showed their US pricing for the iPhone 5 and it is the same pricing as the iPhone 4S. We'll keep on top of all the iPhone 5 plan combinations for this new iPhone when they are announced by Australian carriers next week.
Alex will cover all the specs in more detail today. Photos are from Engadget who provided excellent coverage of this event.
